C'est l'Halloween!

As I'm sure all of you know, the kids are very wound up about the idea of Halloween! We will be incorporating some Halloween activities into our work this week as we wrap up our final unit My Family & Autumn.

While I'm on the topic of Halloween, we will be having a class Halloween party on Friday morning with some games, songs and special treats, followed by a school wide Halloween activity on Friday afternoon that will involve students circulating between different activities. Students are allowed to dress up on Friday, if they so choose, but it's not required. Please remember that no masks are to be worn and if students are wearing Halloween makeup that it be applied at home. Please do not send your child to school with makeup to be applied or 'touched up' at school. We also discourage students from bringing play guns, swords, etc... Lastly, if you're sending in any Halloween treats with your child, please remember that Greenfield nut free.

We finished making our family trees and they are posted outside of our classroom. Thanks for sending in the photos. The kids really enjoyed doing this project. During our last week of this theme we'll be working on a haunted house project. Students will colour and cut out their own haunted houses and do a writing activity describing their haunted house. It's will be a lot of fun, and the finished products will be on display at the end of the week.

This week we'll continue our work on acquiring the French vocabulary words for the parts of the body. The sight words for the week are j'aime, des, viens, gros, grosse. The sounds we're focusing on this week are au, eau and y. We'll also be doing a special focus on vowels.

Students have begun borrowing books from the school's library books. We go to the library on day three, which is this coming Wednesday. The librarian suggested that students take home their library book for one night and then bring it back to the classroom the following day. We have a special library book box in the class, and then all students may read the borrowed books. Please make sure that your child's library book is put back into their homework bag.

In Math this week we'll be doing some review of the previous unit on patterns, and then continue on working with the ten frame. This week we'll also focus on the concepts of plus one and minus one, while using the ten frame as a tool.

The upcoming theme for November is "En pleine forme avec mes amis les animaux" (With my friends the animals).

I sent home the monthly menu for November on Friday. If you'd like to make a food order, please send it back with payment as soon as possible.

The school choir for primary students has begun. Choir practice takes place at big recess on Tuesdays and Fridays. All students are welcome!

Lastly, parent teacher interviews are coming up and have been officially slated for Wednesday November 10th and Friday November 12th.  Because I'll be away on Friday the 12th, I'm hoping to hold interviews from 3 - 8pm on Monday November 8th, Tuesday November 9th and Wednesday November 10th. If this is a problem, please contact me and we can make alternate arrangements. I've had some requests for particular times. I'll try my best to accommodate you whenever possible.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

News From Our Classroom

Good evening,

Sorry for the delay in having this blog posted! Thanks for your patience.

The students were excited to fill me in about their field-trip to Cackleberry Farms. It sounds as though it was quite a success! Thanks to those of you who volunteered to come along and help out.

The Norcard stationery orders have arrived. I would have sent them home with the students, but I think all of them are too large for them to carry/fit into their backpacks. Please email me and we can make arrangements to get those items home.

The family tree projects are going well. If you haven't already sent in some photos for this project (that you don't mind having cut up!) please do so. I hope to have these finished up tomorrow and up for display.

We will continue to focus on our theme of autumn and the family. This week we'll also be doing some vocabulary activities about the parts of the body.

In Math we will continue to work on numbers from 0 to 20 and how to represent these numbers in a variety of ways; written form, numerical form, and with objects or drawings. So far the students are doing very well with this concept. We will gradually begin working more and more with the ten frame. A ten frame is a tool that helps students visualize adding and subtracting. We'll be working with it a lot! I've attached an example of a ten frame below, fairly straight forward, but I thought it couldn't hurt!

I'm in the process of updating the students' homework folders for this week. Students will have assigned homework on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Of course during the weekends, feel free to review any of what we've been working on to date with your child.

This week we'll also be focusing on the weather and its related vocabulary.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email or by phone at Greenfield at any time.

Take care,

Ellen

Update

Hello!

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be posting my weekly blog tomorrow evening instead of tonight. I need to see how far along the substitute got with the students until I can paint an accurate picture of this week's goals.

Sorry for the delay!

En automne avec ma famille

Good evening,

The title of my blog post is the name of our new theme for the month of October. During the month of October we'll be exploring the theme of 'Autumn with my family'. As part of this theme, students will make their own family tree (immediate family only) complete with photos. I will send home more info about this project this week. Students will also be introduced to the vocabulary of family (mother, father, sister, brother, etc). We'll also be talking about the upcoming holiday of Thanksgiving.

In Math we will be continuing work on chapter 2 which discusses numbers from 1 to 20. Part of the work we'll be doing will be learning about the various ways that numbers can be represented, whether it be with words, numerals, or represented by objects. This week we'll also be beginning our math centres where the children have the opportunity to work independently or in groups on math activities related to patterning and representing numbers from one to twenty.

I'll be sending home red homework duotangs with the children this week. The homework for each evening will be outlined in the homework duotang.

The students are speaking more and more French in the classroom everyday! It's exciting to see the transformation. You may be interested in checking out the Canadian Parents for French website for tips, info about ways in which you can support your child's learning. http://www.cpf.ca/eng/home.html

Please make sure to send the October menu in with your child tomorrow, if you haven't already done so.

Remember that our fieldtrip to pick apples is on the morning of Wednesday October 13th. If anyone is interested in volunteering, please let me know before this Wednesday.

Lastly, I will be away for awhile as of this coming Thursday because I'm getting married next weekend. Ms. Becky Stewart will be teaching the students while I'm away on this coming Thursday and Friday, as well as next Tuesday and Wednesday. She is bilingual and has worked with the students a few days already this year. If you need to contact Ms. Stewart for any reason i.e pickup changes, questions, etc... please write a note in your child's agenda or call the school and leave a message for her. I will not be checking my work email while I'm away, nor posting a blog next Sunday. My next post will be October 17th.
 Take care,

Madame Ellen
